What is Automatically Generated content?
Automatically generated (also called auto-generated content or AI-based content) is content that's been generated programmatically using machines which are called article spinners. Google has mentioned that they will take strict actions on AI-based content in webmaster guidelines. They can take action on content intended to manipulate search results and not assist users. These are just a few examples of cases that Google may take action on:
Search keywords may identify text that is not clear to the reader.
An automated tool automatically translates the text without human review or curation.
Automated processes such as the Markov chain are used to generate content.
Text generated by automated synonymizing and obfuscation methods.
Content created from scraping Atom/RSS results or search results.
Stitching, or the combination of content from multiple web pages without adding enough value.
Last week, the page had a bullet point that stated "Automatically generated contents" as something against webmaster guidelines. It now says, "Automatically generated material intended to manipulate search ranking." It was always clear that the detailed page intends to manipulate search results and not assist them." We don't believe anything has changed in the guidance since it's always there in the main document. In a recent podcast, Google stated that if the quality of AI content was still not high enough then we cannot consider it for search quality purposes. John Mueller, Google's director of product management, said that."Content generators/spinners are a part of the internet's history. You can see that people have used many different tools and tricks to accomplish this. Sites don't require help to create low-quality content. Google may take manual action on such content."
Google may take manual action on such content.
What is a manual action?
Google issues a manual action process against a site with a human reviewer. It is when a human reviewer at Google figures out that pages on the website are not compliant with Google's webmaster quality guidelines. Most manual actions address the website's attempts to manipulate Google's search index. Most such issues reported here will result negatively. Due to these issues, Google ranks or omits the pages or websites from search results. It will not even offer any visual indication to the user. So, Google doesn't favor automatically generated content in webmaster guidelines.
Google will notify you in the Manual Actions report If they take manual action on your website. You can view this report in the Search Console message center. Google algorithms are extremely good at detecting spam. In most cases, they automatically discover it and remove it from their search results. However, their ultimate goal is to protect the quality of Google's index. So, they're also willing to take manual action to remove spammy webpages and websites from Google search results.
People are trying to trick their way to the top of the results page since search engines existed. Automatically generated content in Webmaster Guidelines isn't new. This is bad for searchers. Why? Because such tricks bury the more relevant pages under irrelevant results. It's also bad for legitimate websites because finding them becomes challenging.
