Google is currently rolling out a conversion migration tool for you to import your existing goals from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4. In the Setup Assistant tab, you can access this under your GA4 settings screen under the Conversions section.
Using the conversion migration tool, you can quickly create eligible goals from your Universal Analytics property and convert them into Google Analytics 4 events. It is not yet available, but we expect to see it soon. Charles Farina shared screenshots on Twitter to explain how it works:
How Conversion Migration Tool for GA4 Works
The conversion migration tool automatically performs the following actions for each eligible Universal Analytics goal that you choose:
- Creates a new event rule
- Marks the event designed as a conversion
Universal Analytics properties can set up multiple goal types. The tool allows you to migrate these two types of goals:
Destination Goal:
When a user arrives on a page such as a confirmation or thank you page
Event goal:
When a user triggers an event such as the social suggestion
These goals cannot be automatically moved, and they will not appear in the tool.
- Pages/Screens per session goals.
- Duration goals.
- Smart goals.
- Any goal which uses regular expressions.
Up to 30, custom conversion events can be created per standard Google Analytics 4 property.
How do I use Conversion Migration Tool for GA4?
You will need the Editor Role in your account to use the conversion migration tool.
- In Google Analytics, click Admin.
- Make sure you select your account in the Account column. If you have only one Google Analytics account, it will be already set.
- Select the Google Analytics 4 property for which you have currently collected data in the Property column.
- Click Setup Assistant in the Property column.
- Under Conversions, go to Import existing goals from your connected Universal Analytics property, and click Get started.
- Go to Import existing goals from your connected property panel. Select which goals you’d like to recreate as conversion events in your new GA4 property.
- Click Import selected conversions in the top right.
When your goals are successfully recreated in Google Analytics 4, a confirmation message will appear in the lower-left corner of your screen.
